Iran Announces First Nuclear Fuel Rod

Iran's nuclear agency said Sunday that scientists have produced Iran's first nuclear fuel rod, according to published media reports.

"Scientists and researchers at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have succeeded in producing and testing the first sample of a nuclear fuel rod," said an announcement by the Atomic Energy Organization, the Associated Press reported.

It was unclear, however, whether the fuel rod contained enriched uranium pellets or was empty and being used for testing, the news agency added. Iran is attempting to master the nuclear fuel cycle and says its efforts are aimed at producing electricity and medical radioisotopes used for treating cancer patients, the AP noted.But the U.S. and some European nations say Iran is using its nuclear program to try to develop nuclear weapons.Also Sunday, Iran's navy said it had tested an advanced surface-to-air missile during an exercise near the Strait of Hormuz.
