Intel: Bernstein Skeptical of Set-Top Effort

Bernstein Research‘s Craig Moffett, who follows cable and telcos, today dumps cold water on the report last night by The Wall Street Journal‘s Sam Schechner and Don Clark that Intel (INTC) has been talking with networks about bringing their content to an online subscription video offering through an Intel-developed set-top box.

“Bully for them,” writes Moffett, who has written on more than one occasion about the obstacles facing so-called “virtual cable operators,” or “virtual MSOs,” to use industry jargon.

“And it sounds like theyre almost there,” he continues. “Theyve [Intel] got the set top box concept down. Now, all they need is everything else. Content, for example. According to the Journal, they have now asked for rate cards from the media companies.”

“Sounds like a great place to start. Good luck and Godspeed, Intel.”

Intel shares today are up 50 cents, or 2%, at $27.49.
