Apple Tops RIM in Canada, Says Bloomberg

Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM) are the subject of an article this morning by Bloomberg’s Hugo Miller, who writes that Apple sold more smartphones in Canada last year than RIM, 2.85 million to 2 million, the first time the former has surpassed the latter’s shipments.

The report, writes Miller, is based on data compiled by both Bloomberg and by research firm IDC. The article quotes BMO Harris Private Banking manager Paul Taylor in Toronto speaking of the “strategic” loss of RIM’s home market. But the article does also pick up on RIM’s stronger showing in some overseas markets. For example in the Middle East and Africa, which it still largely outsells the iPhone.

Apple shares are down $4.20, or 0.7%, at $598.30 in pre-market trading, while RIMM shares are down 12 cents, or 0.9%, at $13.92.
