BMW Recalls Nearly 90,000 Minis

BMW AG is recalling certain high-performance versions of the Mini Cooper, Cooper Clubman, Cooper convertible and Cooper Countryman with model years from 2007 through 2011.

According to a post on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Web site, the recalled cars' electric auxiliary water pumps have circuit boards that can malfunction and overheat. If the circuit boards smolder, they can result in vehicle fires.

The recall, which is expected to begin next month, affects 88,911 vehicles. Mini dealers will replace the water pumps free of charge. The recall covers Mini/Cooper S cars with 2007 through 2011 model years; Mini/Cooper S Clubmans with 2008 through 2011 model years; Mini/Cooper S convertibles with 2009 through 2011 model years; Mini/Cooper S Countrymans with 2011 model years; Mini/John Cooper Works cars with 2009 through 2011 model years; Mini/JCW Clubmans with 2009 model years; and Mini/JCW convertibles with 2010 and 2011 model years.Non-turbocharged Mini vehicles are not affected by the recall. Owners may contact BMW at 1-866-275-6464, according to the NHTSA post.
